Lighting effects on camera techniques during a moving image

Lighting is very important when capturing moving images, if the lighting in an area of shooting is too dark then the video will be grainy and look terrible however the director can use light to empower the scene. In horror genre films the darkness can be used to create a sense of dread for the viewer as it is hiding something from them which adds to the tension of the film. Lighting within the horror genre can also be used to focus your attention on a specific part of the screen or to make the viewer uncomfortable if the light is showing them something scary.

Lighting in film is essential to whatever is being done in film as it can direct the viewers attention or can help to bring scenes to life. Light can also be used to create meaning in scenes as explained by apocalypse now when a character is lit by chiaroscuro lighting it shows that part of what he says makes sense but the other half is complete madness.

Lighting equipment questions

A small documentary where portability is paramount. I would probably use a camera mounted light or a camera mounted ring light as i can move it with the camera and all i would need to do is switch it on. A negative of this is that the camera is way heavier but the positive is that it is super easy to set up.

Talking head style interviews. Studio lights as the person talking is likely to be inside, sitting in a room. Using two studio lights means that the face of the person speaking would always be lit and you can use filters so that you don't blind them. Pros is that once they are set up they require no further alterations, cons is that they take a little bit of setting up.

A night time shoot. use four lights surrounding the person speaking so that they are lit from all angles but make sure they are out of the shot. If the person is moving combine with a camera mounted light. Pros lots of light and will be able to see them in the dark. Cons is that it takes ages to set up and people can't really move.
